MIDI means Musical Instrument Digital Interface. This is a standard protocol for communicating musical events and settings. In stage lighting, a MIDI message is often used to star a cue or set a level. Commercial lighting consoles are commonly MIDI capable, and can send and/or receive various MIDI messages.

Devices called MIDI Control Surfaces are available. These relatively inexpensive devices have knobs, buttons and faders that send MIDI messages.
